    The Friday File: To focus Congress on GDP growth, give members incentive pay. Pay them a base of $60,000 (median income) and incentive pay that rises with GDP. No bonus is paid until GDP growth hits 2%. Between 2%-3% they get a 30% bonus, from 3%-4% a 75% bonus, from 4%-5% a 200% bonus and from 5%-6% a 400% bonus. These incentives should see economic growth trump party purity.

    Our very own Calvin Snow spends his weekends "goin racin".  He says it's just a hobby but this past weekend he won the IHRA Iron Man race in Augusta Georgia.  Calvin spent the better part of 4 days behind the wheel and took home the trophy on Sunday afternoon.  Stay tuned for a link to the magazine article featuring our very own "cover boy". Way to go Calvin.  Congratulations!

    Good News On Sprinklers


    Special Note on Building Codes

    R.4321 – International Residential Building Code
    (Note: This is not a bill, but a regulation that will be promulgated).
    This week, the 2012 I-Codes were approved on second reading by the Senate. As submitted by LLR, the regulation includes numerous modifications as well as the removal of the mandate for residential fire sprinklers. Thanks to our HBASC Building Codes Committee and its Chairman, Andy Barber, the HBASC was able to make several modifications to the 2012 I-Codes. Sen. Shane Massey (R-Aiken) deserves a great deal of credit for safeguarding the rights of homeowners across the state and defending affordable housing for its citizens.

    SC Housing Hall of Fame to Induct Three New Members

    The South Carolina Housing Hall of Fame trustees have announced that Marc Ellis, John W. Uldrick and C. Dan Joyner (posthumous) will be inducted into the prestigious honor society for their work in and support of South Carolina’s home building industry. Each inductee, or their family, will be presented with the trademark medallion and plaque during a ceremony on September 20 at the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia.

    “We couldn’t have asked for three better nominees than Marc Ellis, Johnny Uldrick or C. Dan Joyner because of their unwavering efforts to protect the home building industry and the American dream of homeownership,” said Kenneth E. Ormand, Jr., chairman of the S.C. Housing Hall of Fame Trustees. “The South Carolina home building industry has been fortunate to have these champions working for the benefit of our citizens.”

    Marc Ellis is a strong advocate of housing who has had a remarkable affect on the housing industry. Marc Ellis has been an active and vocal participant in every residential construction issue in his community of Hilton Head Island and across S.C. for more than 20 years. His innumerable hours of commitment to the housing industry should stand as a model to anyone who owes their livelihood to the construction industry.

    John (Johnny) Uldrick is renowned for his craftsmanship, but more importantly, his high standards are what all construction is measured by in the upstate region. Johnny has also willingly and proudly accepted the role of mentor to other builders and a leader to the Home Builders Association. The homeowners of S.C. will be better off for generations to come because of his contributions to the housing industry.

    C. Dan Joyner’s contributions to the housing industry are varied and stem from his success in building one of the largest real estate brokerage firms in the U.S. He once listed one of his greatest accomplishments as, “finding homes for people.” However, his business success is not the story that defines C. Dan Joyner. How he gave back to his community and industry is what best reflects C. Dan Joyner. He was a driving force to support efforts to boost Greenville from a sleepy textile town into one of the “most livable” communities in America.

    “Without the concern and actions of these three personalities, our industry would not have been able to weather the recent economic storm and would not have been able to maintain the level of strength which it has today,” said Ormand. “I congratulate the accomplishments of Messrs. Ellis, Uldrick and Joyner and I welcome them into the S.C. Housing Hall of Fame.” Messers. Ellis and Uldrick and the family of Mr. Joyner will accept their nominations into the S.C. Housing Hall of Fame on Thursday, September 20 at the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia. Tickets for this event are on sale now at the Home Builders Association of South Carolina.     List of Improving Housing Markets Expands to 259 in February; All 50 States Represented

    February 6, 2013 - The number of improving housing markets continued to expand for a sixth consecutive month to a total of 259 metropolitan areas on the National Association of Home Builders/First American Improving Markets Index (IMI) for February, released today. This is up from 242 markets listed as improving in January, and includes entrants from all 50 states and the District of the Columbia .

    The IMI identifies metro areas that have shown improvement from their respective troughs in housing permits, employment and house prices for at least six consecutive months. A total of 20 new metros were added to the list and three were dropped from it this month. Newly added metros include such geographically diverse locations as Rome , Ga. ; Fort Wayne , Ind. ; Myrtle Beach , S.C. ; Albuquerque , N.M. ; and Racine , Wis.

    “The fact that all 50 states now have at least one metro on the improving list shows that the housing recovery has substantial momentum and continues to expand from one market to the next,” said 2013 NAHB Chairman Rick Judson, a home builder from Charlotte, N.C. “Of course, there is still much room for improvement in metros that have not yet been listed as well as those that have, and we know that a key factor slowing this progress is today’s overly stringent mortgage standards that are keeping qualified buyers on the sidelines.”

    “Just over 70 percent of the 361 metros covered by the IMI are listed as improving this month,” said NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe. “That’s a far cry from when we initiated this index with just 12 improving metros in September of 2011 for the purpose of highlighting places that didn’t fit the mold of the national headlines. Today, the story is about how widespread the recovery has become as conditions steadily improve in markets nationwide.”

    “The continued expansion of improving housing markets in February should help convince those who have been considering a home purchase that now is the time to go forward with those plans,” said Kurt Pfotenhauer, vice chairman of First American Title Insurance Company.

    The IMI is designed to track housing markets throughout the country that are showing signs of improving economic health. The index measures three sets of independent monthly data to get a mark on the top improving Metropolitan Statistical Areas. The three indicators that are analyzed are employment growth from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, house price appreciation from Freddie Mac and single-family housing permit growth from the U.S. Census Bureau. NAHB uses the latest available data from these sources to generate a list of improving markets. A metropolitan area must see improvement in all three measures for at least six consecutive months following those measures’ respective troughs before being included on the improving markets list.
